
I have always wanted to be a travel agent .... well that's not entirely true but I did know that when I would walk past the local travel agency and would see the posters of the of blue waters and far away cities, I knew I wanted to be a part of whatever that was. I would wander into the store and ask questions with the hope of going somewhere. In reality, it seemed too far away, too daunting, too expensive, too complex just too much. But I've had enough jobs to know that I can learn most systems and if only I could work in that office, I too would learn the secrets of travelling. I would ask for brochures faking the answers those kindly agents would ask without a clue of what I was saying. I didn't know people who travelled overseas unless they were in the military and while I had parents who worked hard to introduce me to the many sights the United States had to share, When this opportunity came to me through a friend, I knew it was time. I grabbed hold and haven't let go and what I have learned is my love for travel isn't going anywhere. I never tire of learning about new destinations or experiences to have, new foods or traditions. I enjoy learning about my own country as well as the many beautiful plaaces in the world. I enjoy helping clients navigate the taunting task of planning travel and creating the vacation of their dreams. I also enjoy introducing this business to others so that they too can share in this amazing field and am never surprised at how much I have in common with others who love exploring as much as me.
This is not an easy field. The business has changed so most agents are independent and work for themselves with varying degrees of experience and knowledge. We are asked to be our own marketing company, find our own clients, be the researcher, the problem solver, the organizer, the presenter and if we are interested in sharing this business with others, we must also find those potential agents too. It can feel overwhelming especially if this is a part-endeavor on the part of the agent. Are you asking who would want to be a travel agent yet and why? It's simple. You see, when people are passionate about something, it's not hard. It's fun. It's that simple. Why, because I never tire of talking about where people have been or where they want to go - I don't tire when learning about different destinations to visit or the best vendor to use to get me there. I don't tire about sharing this business with others all because I find it exciting, rewarding and self-fulfilling for no other reason than I love it. Unlike traditional businesses, a travel business allows you to monetize something you already enjoy.
I said I had a passion for travel but it's a business and a good business opportunity at that. This is one of the largest industries in the world. Regardless of the economy, there is no sign that this multi-trillion dollar market will slow down anytime soon. People would rather spend money on travel and experiences and cut back in other places. Unlike brick and mortar businesses, starting a travel business requires minimal investment. A laptop and wi-fi are all you need to run your business offering people the opportunity to work from the beach, a cafe', the parent pick-up-line or at home.
But what about the money? Can you really make money as a travel agent? Why yes you can. This business offers multiple income streams from booking commissions, travel incentives and team building. There are multiple optional paths to earnings all tailored around the agents preference and availability. A large percent of agents work part-time so this is a business that can fit into most schedules and lifestyles and while some do it part-time, others may start that way while replacing the corporate lifestyle for something that brings them more joy and flexibility. Earning while you yourself are travelling, working on your own terms without bosses, offices or strict schedules sounds appealing to most wanderers. There are even opportunities to generate legacy businesses that can be passed down to family members earning income for years to come.
Should you be a travel agent? I don't know that answer exept if you are a professional who is interested in shifting away from the grind of your job, or someone who might want to monetize their own adventures or your a stay-at-home parent or retiree wanting to supplement your income or you are an entrepreneur looking for a a side hustle with passive income potential then I would say yes, I think you should be open to the possibility. Nothing makes me happier than to introduce others to this business that I feel so passionately about and help guide them to a successful business.
